The new Doctor Who mobile game from Tag Games BBC Games, The Mazes of Time, is now online.

The action / puzzle game can be downloaded from the Apple App Store for £2.39 (iPhone) or £2.99 (iPad), and allows you to play the roles of both The Doctor and Amy Pond.

DWO's Verdict

With so many games to choose from on the app store, many Doctor Who fans will quite rightly have a critical eye when it comes round to playing a game that's actually based on their favourite TV show. And with the BBC arriving in the app store a little late on the scene, you would think they might have missed the boat. Think again! Its clear with The Mazes of Time, that the BBC have been patiently waiting in the wings, plotting their move into the mobile gaming industry, and what a joy to behold it is!

From the crisp graphics, to the addictive gameplay, right through to the storyline, everything knits together to round off one of the best games we have ever played on the iPhone.

This is a game that will appeal to both new series and classic series fans, as one particular level sees The Doctor and Amy travel to the Ice Tombs of Telos - one of the many highlights that are worth the games price alone.

Rating: 5/5

In a final bid to regain control of the TARDIS' faulty control system the Doctor is driven to experiment with a dangerous untried combination.

With a violent explosion the TARDIS blacks out and the crew find themselves trapped inside. A simple technical fault? Sabotage? Or something even more sinister?

Tension mounts as the Doctor and his companions begin to suspect one another. What has happened to the TARDIS? Slowly a terrifying suspicion dawns. Has the TARDIS become the prisoner of some powerful fifth intelligence which is even now haunting the time-machine's dark and gloomy corridors?

William Russell, who played the Doctor's companion Ian in the original TV serial, reads Nigel Robinson's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1988.

The Edge of Destruction is released on 6th January 2011, priced £12.99.

If you’re looking for a great way to make sure that you haven’t missed a moment of the Doctor’s adventures, and want to go back and relive your favourite episodes over and over again, all without having to stray too far from Doctor Who Online, then you’re in luck.

LOVEFiLM have joined up with Doctor Who to provide dozens of old episodes which LOVEFiLM will kindly deliver straight to your door, visit the site now.

They have cut out the need for purchasing DVDs – or even the time usually associated with the old methods of renting – and brought the Doctor right to your doorstep, and all without the help of a TARDIS!

LOVEFiLM have a selection of DVD deals which are much cheaper and more convenient than having to go to a rental shop and will give you easy access to the most recent episodes – watch them at your leisure and then just pop them in the postbox and LOVEFiLM will send you the next episodes straight away! You can enjoy all of this alongside the rest of the LOVEFiLM catalogue, which is growing by the day, so there are plenty of other science fiction adventures you can catch up on too.

For us, the move comes at just the right time, as it’s been almost 6 months since the Doctor has been on our screens, and what better way to whet your appetite for the inevitably brilliant Christmas special than with a marathon session with all of Matt Smith’s run, perhaps you could even directly compare him to David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston’s efforts since the 2005 relaunch – only if you suspect that he stands up to them though.

But one of the extraordinary aspects of the past few series’ has been the depth of story that has rewarded repeat viewing, and Steven Moffat has well and truly picked up where Russell T. Davies left off, so you’ve got no excuse not to enjoy the Doctor at the click of a mouse button.

Return to Earth, released for the Wii, picks up where the DS game, Evacuation Earth, left off and, in storyline terms, is a very accomplished addition to the Doctor Who fold. That is hardly surprising however, given that it was penned by noted author of Doctor Who novels, Oli Smith.

While purists will refuse to acknowledge it as canon, it stands up well enough in its own right and moves the gameplay along well.

For those who didn’t play the prequel, a brief outline is useful, though not essential. Evacuation Earth saw The Doctor and Amy Pond ensuring, appropriately enough, that the Earth is evacuated in the wake of a Solar Storm. They end up on the SS Lucy Gray investigating both the origin of the Storm and an inconveniently vanished TARDIS.

The outing on the Wii picks up with the baton with the Lucy Gray abandoned, and the Cybermen looming – fans of the Daleks will have no choice but to pick up the DS game if they want to see them as the main opposition.

Where Return to Earth, and Wii Games in general, really stands out is the imaginative use of the controller, as it turns into an analogue of the sonic screwdriver, and makes a good job of recreating its functions, even more so if you can get your hands on the add on that literally turns your controller into a replica screwdriver.

And what an innovation it is. The sonic screwdriver is second only to the lightsabre in terms of science fiction items that the Wii remote appears to have been built for and the implementation hasn’t really let down the promise.

But really, the game doesn’t quite fulfil its promise and the narrative is confined to the interior of the spaceship - a little disappointing given the wealth of landscapes on offer within Doctor Who if a bit of imaginations is used.

If you want to try the game before you buy it you can rent it from www.lovefilm.com who are currently offering a free trial.
