BOOK: About Time 2: The Unauthorized Guide to Doctor Who - Second Edition

Mad Norwegian Press is proud to announce the continuation of its flagship series About Time with the About Time 2 Second Edition – an examination of the socio-political conditions in which Doctor Who was made.

Written by Tat Wood, About Time 2 Second Edition concerns Seasons 4 to 6 of Doctor Who (the whole of the Patrick Troughton Era, alongside William Hartnell’s swansong). This represents a seriously major overhaul of the original About Time 2, with new essays and a breathtaking amount of analysis and historical perspective.

As ever, the About Time series seeks to examine Doctor Who through the lens of the real-world social and political changes – as well as ongoing developments in television production that influenced the series in ways big and small – over the course of a generation. Armed with these guidebooks, readers will be able to cast their minds back to 1975, 1982, 2005 and other years to best appreciate the series’ content and character.

Like many small publishers, Mad Norwegian has succumbed to the gravity of the financial risk of mass production (not to mention the risk of unsold overstock) and turned to Print-on-Demand. Print copies of About Time 2 Second Edition will therefore be available through Amazon, through Amazon’s expanded distribution networks in the US
and the UK, and the Mad Norwegian website direct. Ebook copies will be available through Kindle.

Mad Norwegian Publisher Lars Pearson said:

“We realize the shift to Print-on-Demand represents a paradigm shift from the business model we’ve used from the very start – but like so many before us, the plummeting of our financial risk that Print-on-Demand offers outweighs just about every other consideration. We absolutely loved having our mass-produced books pumped into retail chains, enabling customers to see us on the shelves and take some delight in buying a copy, but alas we must live by the financial realities of the world in which we live. However, the new releases will have the same Mad Norwegian zest as before, so we’re hopeful that everyone will be understanding that this mightily helps us to stay in the game.”

About Time 2: Second Edition
will be released on 3rd November (Print) & 1st December (eBook)

REVIEW: 'The Song Of Immaru: Earth's Door' By Peter Dudek

Author: Peter Dudek
Publisher: Arvalast LLC
RRP: £11.19 / $15.99 (Paperback) | £2.22 / $2.99 (Kindle)
Reviewed By: Sebastian J. Brook

The Song of Immaru: Earth’s Door by Peter Dudek turned out to be a fascinating mix of science fiction, fantasy and mystery, with far more going on beneath the surface than first meets the eye. What really drew me in was the way ordinary life gradually gives way to something much bigger, leaving you questioning what is real and how much there is still to discover.

Tarin is an interesting protagonist because he feels like someone trying to make sense of himself as much as the world around him. His struggles make his journey feel personal, while the friendships throughout the story add warmth and humour to the darker, more mysterious elements. It’s a reminder that even when circumstances seem overwhelming, having the right people beside you can make all the difference.

I particularly enjoyed how the story keeps expanding as new pieces of the puzzle fall into place. There’s a real sense of discovery, and the combination of unfamiliar worlds, strange encounters and bigger questions about identity, memory and good versus evil gives the book its own character. The world-building also leaves plenty to explore without losing sight of the human side of the adventure.

It’s a substantial read, but there’s an ambition to the story that makes the journey worthwhile. Anyone who enjoys imaginative storytelling, unexpected revelations and characters who have to grow through difficult experiences should find plenty to appreciate here.

A creative and thought-provoking adventure that balances the extraordinary with the relatable. I came away appreciating its message about friendship, resilience and finding hope when life takes an unexpected turn. Definitely one for readers who enjoy their fantasy with a healthy dose of science fiction!

REVIEW: 'Modern Magic' By Beth Williams

Author: Beth Williams
Publisher: UK Book Publishing
RRP: £10.99 / $13.99 (Paperback) | £2.99 / $3.99 (Kindle)
Reviewed By: Sebastian J. Brook

Modern Magic is a refreshing take on fantasy that brings together the extraordinary and the everyday in the most entertaining way. Beth Williams has created a world where magic may be powerful, but paperwork, office politics and impossible deadlines are still very much part of life. It’s an inspired concept, full of wit, unexpected twists and wonderfully quirky details.

Ivy Armstride is a compelling central character, and following her through the peculiarities of working life in a magical organisation makes for an enjoyable adventure. The cast of eccentric characters and the imaginative magical creatures add plenty of personality, while the underlying mystery gives the story an extra layer of intrigue. Beneath the humour, there’s also a thoughtful look at bureaucracy, ambition and what happens when rigid rules get in the way of doing what’s right.

The writing is sharp and playful, with a distinctly British sense of humour that brings a smile to the page. What makes the book particularly satisfying is the way it balances its lighter moments with genuine suspense and a growing sense of adventure. The magical setting feels delightfully absurd at times, yet the situations are often surprisingly recognisable to anyone who has ever dealt with workplace red tape!

An imaginative, charming and thoroughly entertaining read, Modern Magic is a great choice for anyone who enjoys fantasy with personality, clever humour and a little satirical bite. It also feels like the beginning of a world with plenty more stories to tell. I’d happily return to this wonderfully unconventional corner of magic for another adventure.
