Change, my dear!

Greetings fellow whovians! It's been a hot minute, hasn't it? Today marks the first day of a brand new chapter for Doctor Who Online as we modernise the site for a new digital era.

We're kicking things off right here on the News & Reviews page, which now features a full-featured CMS system to properly manage each news item in a scaled database. You can also (finally) add comments to each News item that's posted!

We've moved to a brand new dedicated server to handle the traffic and upcoming plans we have for the site. I know many of you are wondering what has happened to the old Forum, and we are planning to bring that back in view-only mode, but for the future we are focusing on a brand new Forum in the form of Discord, that will be our main DWO community hub.

Please bear with us as changes are implemented site-wide, and thank you for your continued support as a DWO community member!

VortExtra Returns!

DWO are thrilled to announce the return of our popular VortExtra section.

VortExtra began back in 2007 as a way of providing post-episode features that take the televised stories beyond what you see on screen. We continued the section for 2 more years before giving it a rest as we concentrated on other areas of the site.

In 2011, the DWO team discussed the options of reviving VortExtra, and after much deliberating, we decided to go in a new direction with the feature. We all know what happens in the televised stories, but we never really find out what happened just before or just after The Doctor's involvement in each adventure, as so began our quest to provide fans with just that; a Prologue and an Epilogue for every televised story - complete with Episode Guide entry links.

Roll forward to Easter 2012, and as of today, we have officially relaunched VortExtra, starting with the very first televised story; An Unearthly Child. Each Prologue and Epilogue will contain accompanying illustrations from some of the finest artists and illustrators around (who also happen to be Doctor Who fans), together with narration options and interactivity links.

Each week we will bring you a brand new VortExtra in random order from the shows 49-year history - including Classic and New Series adventures. We have also encouraged some established Authors and Writers to take part (some very well known indeed), in the hopes that maybe just a few of them *might* be up for taking part in the project [you don't ask, you don't get, right?]. We are also looking for fans with experience in writing to send in their submissions to us. A selection of the best material will make it through to have their stories made into VortExtra's with accompanying artwork and narration.

If you wish to take part, please E-mail the DWO team, together with a sample of your writing / artwork to: vortextra@drwho-online.co.uk.

A Doctor Who Christmas Poem By Sebastian J. Brook

As the big day approaches, we wanted to put together a final Christmas present to all our visitors. And so we present to you, our humble Christmas poem:

The Delight Before Christmas

by Sebastian J. Brook

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the land,

we wait for the TARDIS, all blue and so grand.

The shopping is finished - well, as much as we could,

Quick! Down to the pound shop, where Woolworths once stood!

A toy from last year at a bargainous price,

So what if it's plastic? It still looks quite nice!

It's a gift for my uncle, who lives far away,

in the constellation of Kasterborous, the planet Gallifrey!

It exists in a time loop, hard to get to, you see,

there's a Taxi that goes there, with a quite hefty fee.

Ill send it by Reindeer, with my old friend, Saint Nick,

he'll get there in time, with a neat little trick.

He'll slide down the chimney (Yes, they have them there too),

They have them on Skaro! (but ought really not to!).

But the hour gets late, and to home we must go,

through the crowds and carols, and the impending snow.

To a place by the fire, with the Quality Street,

or the Cadburys Roses, or anything sweet!

And then off to bed, where tomorrow we'll find,

a room full of presents, from people so kind.

Skip forward 6 hours, to quarter past three,

We're full up from Turkey, and all the debris.

But in two hours from now and 45 minutes,

we'll be sat all together, watching Doctor Who, innit!

The one with some Dickens, some singing and sharks,

it's written by Moffat, and will be full of such larks!

So we raise up a glass to all fans as we write,

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!

The New DWO News Page!

DWO are pleased to announce the relaunch of our popular News page.

After a few weeks of tweaking, and streamlining, we can now present the new page, complete with full integration into the DWO Forums, search and archive functionality, an email NewsFeed, Twitter retweets and more!

A big Thank You to our resident genius, Rob Halliday, who undertook the job and has been furiously programming away to get it all working seamlessly.

Finally, due to the new system, we can now extend our news contributors, so get ready for even more news items at an even greater frequency.
