In a recent press release at the BBC Press Office website, Matt Smith has been interviewed regarding his role in upcoming drama; Christopher And His Kind.

Christopher And His Kind, by acclaimed British playwright Kevin Elyot (My Night With Reg), explores Christopher Isherwood's formative years in Thirties Berlin in the run-up to the Second World War. Here, Matt Smith reveals why he wanted to play one of the 20th century's finest writers.

"First and foremost as always it was the script that attracted me to the role," explains Matt Smith, who is best known for playing The Doctor in Doctor Who. "The story is such a fascinating one. I loved the idea of playing someone so extreme to me, that different kind of vocalisation and physical shape.

"Christopher Isherwood is such an interesting man. There's something very romantic about Christopher and Auden going off as young men to Berlin. At the heart of the piece is Christopher's acceptance of his own identity and self-discovery – I think we learn about a man exploring his sexuality and the arena in which he can do that freely."

The popular actor explains why visiting the home Isherwood shared with his partner proved to be an invaluable experience.

"For research I went to see Don Bachardy [Isherwood's partner before he died] in the States at the house they shared. Don helped me understand his character – he said Christopher was very polite. Just seeing the love Don had for him, and to be in the space where Christopher had lived and written was very informative.

"I also read Christopher's novels, and then spent a lot of time trawling through video footage, watching, listening and repeating his voice. I had a wonderful voice coach called Patsy Rodenburg who said: 'Look, just go for it. Don't worry about trying to imitate him. What's more interesting is trying to capture the essence of the man and then be yourself.'

"I don't know whether I've managed to capture his voice exactly because I think that has to remain the invention of the actor; however, I hope there's an element of him in there."

Playing Isherwood has given Matt a fresh perspective on the magnitude of the work involved in trying to characterise a real person on screen.

"This has given me a great respect for people like Michael Sheen," continues Matt. "But I hope I've captured a moment – that little glimpse of glee in Christopher's eye you know he had; that mischief."

Having to make mental adjustments away from his Doctor Who persona was a hurdle the 28-year-old was able to master.

"Just thinking in a different way physically to The Doctor was also a very interesting challenge for me because one is based on movement and madness and the other on stillness and stiffness really. I hope that you look at this and quickly forget that you're watching The Doctor."

Another challenge for Matt was taking part in the nude scenes ... and experiencing stubble rash for the first time!

"Well, you've just got to commit to it, gung ho. It's different from when you're doing nude scenes with a boy than doing them with a girl, as you can imagine," explains Matt. "But I tried to commit to it and wholeheartedly go for it. Having to kiss boys, and finally understanding the nature of stubble rash, was interesting," he laughs.

Filming took place in Ireland where sets were constructed to resemble Berlin in the Thirties, but Matt had no difficulties visualising the real Berlin because he'd spent some time there shooting another project prior to filming.

"I did a film in Berlin last year before doing Christopher And His Kind; I was there for three months. It's one of my favourite cities in the world. I would have loved to have seen it at that time in the Thirties because even now it has such a liberal sort of atmosphere, that's one of its great virtues. That's one of the things that drew Christopher there, I think."

The Northampton-born actor, whose credits include Moses Jones, Party Animals and The Street, was a huge fan of his period costumes.

"The costume designer has done a wonderful job; the costumes really fly off the screen. I think she captured the Thirties to Fifties brilliantly. It made me want to buy a three-piece suit from the Thirties!" laughs Matt.

Having old friends on set made the experience even more enjoyable, he continues.

"Working with Lindsay Duncan again, who's a great friend of mine, was wonderful. I could work with her on everything I do, every hour of the day. She makes me laugh, she's so much fun. Pip Carter [who also starred alongside Matt in Party Animals] is wonderful as Auden; he's a fabulous actor who really makes it all look very effortless."

Matt, who studied drama with creative writing for a time at the University of East Anglia, has aspirations of his own to be a writer.

"Christopher was such a wonderful writer of prose. The other thing I learnt from Don is Christopher would always write in the morning, he'd get something done every day.

"When I was playing Christopher I would write as much as I could every day. Being around Steven Moffat [Doctor Who writer and creative head] and working with writers like Kevin Elyot has been really interesting. I'm just trying to learn about structure at the moment."

With Christopher Isherwood under his belt, would Matt consider playing another real person on the small screen if the role was right?

"Well I'd quite like to play Ted Hughes. That would be cool."

Resurrection of the Daleks

It is with deepest regret that DWO announces the passing of much-loved Classic Series Actor, Nicholas Courtney.

Nicholas (born in Egypt in 1929), was known to fans for his role as Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in the Classic Series of Doctor Who. He was the only actor to have worked with all of the first five Doctors, as well as the Seventh Doctor from 1965-1989, and was one the longest-serving co-stars in the show's entire history.

Courtney's first appearance in Doctor Who was as Space Security Agent, Bret Vyon, in the First Doctor adventure; The Daleks' Master Plan, but it was for his role as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart (later Brigadier), who made his first appearance in The Web of Fear in 1968, that fans regard most.

In total, the character of The Brigadier appeared in 23 stories:

The Web of Fear, The Invasion, Spearhead from Space, Doctor Who and the Silurians, The Ambassadors of Death, Inferno, Terror of the Autons, The Mind of Evil, The Claws of Axos, Colony in Space, The Daemons, Day of the Daleks, The Time Monster, The Three Doctors, The Green Death, The Time Warrior, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Planet of the Spiders, Robot, Terror of the Zygons, Mawdryn Undead, The Five Doctors & Battlefield.

In 2008, Courtney returned to the role in the spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, in an episode titled, Enemy of the Bane. Fans had long been requesting his return to Doctor Who, but, alas, it never came to pass.

As well as taking part in several Big Finish audio adventures, Courtney also featured as a regular cast member in Cosmic Hobo's The Scarifyers, as Detective Inspector Lionheart, in which his co-stars alongside Terry Molloy (Davros in the Classic Series).

Courtney is survived by his wife, Karen and children, Bella and Philip, whom DWO would like to extend our deepest sympathies to.

"Hearing this news is indeed an incredibly sad blow to fans worldwide. On a personal note, I have had the pleasure of meeting, and indeed working with Nicholas over the years. He was always an incredibly warm, generous and wickedly funny man, who always found time for his fans. He will be sorely missed and leaves an irreplaceable void in Doctor Who."

In a recent article for the Daily Mail newspaper, Classic Series Doctor; Peter Davison discusses his recent trip to Australia and New Zealand.

On the thought of travelling with children, Davison had the following to say:

"My wife Elizabeth and I thought it sounded a great idea but we had two major reservations. It wasn't the fans, the signings or hanging out with the likes of Hercules and Flash Gordon at sci-fi events that bothered us; it was the thought of dragging our two boisterous boys, Louis and Joel, both aged under ten, halfway across the world. The prospect of a nightmare 21-hour flight was not enticing. But we decided to bite the bullet and booked New Zealand, with a stopover in Sydney."

On the New Zealand leg of his trip, Davison got to meet the Weta team, who, it became clear, were big Doctor Who fans:

"Mix in a dash of geekdom (one of the Weta guys disappeared suddenly, only to return from his house around the corner with an obscure episode of Doctor Who circa 1982 that he just happened to have on his bookshelf) and their success in the film industry begins to make sense."

Those of you wishing to escape the trappings of the real world for a few hours, can take solace in what is arguably one of the finest online sims for Doctor Who. The 'Katrina' region of SecondLife, is a land dedicated to Doctor Who, with painstaking attention to detail from a team of designers who, quite frankly, are geniuses.

But what is this SecondLife? Isn't it that online virtual world that you sometimes hear about in the news? Well…yes…it is, but the Katrina sim is a little different, in that it has everything a Doctor Who fan could want, housed in a friendly, inviting, and thoroughly entertaining area. It's a place where everything you ever wanted to do in the Doctor Who universe, can actually happen and become reality, albeit, virtually.

The sim is an incredibly loyal reconstruction of the Cardiff bay area, complete with Roald Dahl Plass; Millennium Centre et al (pictured). The best part is that within this familiar setting are attractions that will be of interest to all Doctor Who fans; including a Doctor Who Museum / Exhibition (pictured), a cinema (streaming Doctor Who related YouTube videos), as well as the ability to walk through and operate a wide variety of TARDIS' from the show. You can even dress up as your favourite characters from the show, and take part in battles as your favourite Monster / Villain.

One other particular feature of the sim that is worth a special mention, is the Hands of Omega Time Travelling Capsule range. The Hands of Omega team have worked hard to produce fully operational TARDIS' that users of SecondLife can buy and fly around the sim. Just hop aboard your Police Box, set the controls to a location in SecondLife, and within seconds you will be transported through time and space.

One cannot help being reduced to a child as you spend hours playing with the numerous controls and landing in reproduced locations from the TV series. The sheer hard work and effort that the team have put into the range is admirable to say the least. Worthy of a special mention is their 11th Doctor TTC (pictured).

T.P. was perhaps best known to Doctor Who fans for his role as Captain Cook in The Seventh Doctor adventure; The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of the charter of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Mail is issuing a set of 6 stamps and a miniature sheet, one of which features David Tennant.

Working with the Company Royal Mail selected six iconic Royal Shakespeare Company productions of Shakespeare’s plays to illustrate the issue.

1st class - Hamlet - The stamp shows former Doctor Who David Tennant as Hamlet in 2008.

66p - The Tempest - Antony Sher plays Prospero in the 2009 production.

68p - Henry VI - Chuk Iwuji plays Henry VI in the 2006 production.

76p - King Lear - A classic shot of Paul Schofield as Lear from 1962.

After a longer than planned hiatus, DWO's very own Doctor Who Podcast, The DWO WhoCast is returning.

With nearly 200 episodes under its belt since 2006, the show returns with two new hosts that will be familiar to most of our visitors.

Our first host is Cameron K. McEwan, who many of you will know as the editor of fellow Doctor Who site, Blogtor Who. On joining the team, Cameron said:

"After a number of years expressing my opinions and thoughts through mere text, I'm delighted to be using my own actual voice now to help highlight the Scottish agenda in Doctor Who. I can't think of a better way to do this than through The DWO WhoCast."

Joining Cameron is a veteran of The DWO WhoCast, as we welcome back Tony Gallichan. Tony is also the host of the popul ar podcast, The Flashing Blade, and on rejoining The DWO WhoCast had the following to say:

"I'm surprised and delighted that I have been persuaded to return. The DWO WhoCast has become the Morcombe and Wise show of podcasts. I think that the memory cheats. Stay tuned!"

Outgoing host and creator of The DWO WhoCast, Paul Wilson had the following advice for the new hosts:

"I wish you all the best and I'm sure you will entertain everyone. Just remember to give your honest opinions, and never leave a pie in the oven whilst interviewing any guests!"

Outgoing co-host and DWO Editor, Sebastian J. Brook had the following words of encouragement for the boys:

At Midnight on Saturday 12th February 2011, The Doctor Who Appreciation Society will open the first section of it’s extensive archive online. They have a massive collection of publications about Doctor Who going back over thirty years and in the coming months will make some of the best parts available online, starting on Saturday with a number of interviews with people from years gone by.

Future selections will include items on conventions, newspaper stories, reference items, the changing faces of The Doctor and more.

Each item is, where possible, presented in it’s original format showing the public the changing face of Doctor Who Appreciation.

The ‘Celestial Archive’ will be available from Saturday at http://www.dwasonline.co.uk.

Although hardly the pinnacle of reliable news, The Sun newspaper today reported the casting of Model and Actress, Lily Cole in Series 6 of Doctor Who.

DWO have confirmed the news, and Lily will indeed be featuring in the new series, in Episode Three, which is reportedly set in the 1600's and is currently filming in Cornwall.

The Metro newspaper have also run with the story, and include some images from the filming.

BBC Worldwide is to launch its first ever shop devoted to Doctor Who at the much anticipated Doctor Who Experience. The shop will be a treasure trove for fans showcasing Doctor Who toys, games, books and licensed merchandise. Designed, staffed and managed by brand experience and retail specialists Brandnew Corporation, it is the first time BBC Worldwide has created a stand-alone retail operation dedicated to a single television brand. The shop will open on 20th February in tandem with the Doctor Who Experience and remain open throughout its run.

The Doctor Who Experience will be further supported by a Wi-Fi service exclusive to Olympia. Also provided by Brandnew, the ‘closed loop’ mobile Wi Fi platform is dual purpose – while receiving redeemable coupons for use in the Doctor Who shop, visitors can also use smartphones to enjoy an immersive browsing experience related to the aliens, monsters and storylines at the show. It is the first time an event at Olympia has used Wi Fi to enable mobile content to be distributed this way.

The Wi Fi service has an easy login interface and one click access to content. From a special offers area, users download promotional barcodes which are then swiped at the checkout reader in the usual way, with price reductions shown at the till and on receipts. The wireless service is security encrypted and much faster than any 3G network. Much of the material for download is exclusive to the Dr Who Experience with a wealth of facts, figures and information. A special subtitling service can be accessed for the deaf, ensuring the Experience – led by the Doctor’s own vocal commands – is just as meaningful.

The shop will retail over 400 Doctor Who SKU’s at any one time, with many items exclusive to Olympia – a showcase of licensed product larger than anything available on the high street in one place. The Doctor Who shop is a stand-alone outlet adjacent to the café, though most visitors will enter after enjoying the Experience and Exhibition. The 133 square metres has a circular layout to encourage easy and full navigation of the merchandise. The tills and checkout area at the centre mimic the central console of the TARDIS.

The brief from BBC Worldwide was to create a retail extension of the Dr Who brand experience. The Doctor Who Experience promises to be a spectacular event, featuring an exhilarating walk-through adventure, where visitors can step into a full recreation of the Eleventh Doctor’s TARDIS, and an ‘out of this world’ exhibition featuring iconic Doctor Who props and costumes from its 47 year history. This is the first ever fully immersive Doctor Who attraction - an unprecedented opportunity for fans to step through a crack in time and take part in their own Doctor Who adventure in the role of the Doctor’s companion. Their challenge will be to reunite the Doctor with the TARDIS whilst facing some of the best-loved and most-feared monsters from the hit series, including a Dalek spaceship and Weeping Angels.

Brandnew Corporation is responsible for the full retail offer at the Dr Who Experience; designing the interior and layout, determining the fixtures and displays, setting up the till and EPOS systems, product ranging and merchandising. The company is also tasked with the live customer experience; recruiting, training and briefing staff for the interactive show, exhibition and shop, plus stewarding at the event itself. 

Alex Johns, MD at Brandnew Corporation said “After the exhilaration of the Doctor Who Experience the area of the shop and café provide an opportunity for fans to catch their breath. Inspired by what they’ll have seen and experienced, our retail offer makes it both easy and pleasurable to turn their excitement into tangible rewards”. He continued “The Wi Fi platform will considerably enhance the immersive experience for all Doctor Who lovers while maximising footfall and sales in the shop. It is an important part of our ‘from the till backwards’ approach to retail planning”

Some of the innovative plans we have, in particular with regards to new technology being applied at the Experience, are state of the art. Speaking live on BBC Radio 2, Little Britain and Come Fly With Me star, David Walliams, confirmed that he has a role in the upcoming series of Doctor Who.

Speaking on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Walliams stated: "I've actually been offered a part in Doctor Who, which I'm very excited about." He continued: "I've said yes. I don't think I can reveal much, I'll just say I'm playing an alien."

He added that he will be filming the role "in a few weeks", which means it will form part of the second half of the season which will air in the Autumn.

Former EastEnders actor Lee Ross and Misfits guest star Danny Sapani have both landed roles in the new series of Doctor Who, their agency CVs reveal.

Lee Ross, who played alcoholic wife beater Owen Turner in the BBC One soap between 2006-2009, has been cast as Boatswain in Episode 3, written by Steve Thompson (Sherlock) and directed by Jeremy Webb. Ross also played Gene Hunt’s rival, DCI Derek Litton, in both Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes.

Danny Sapani, who played doomed probabtion officer Tony Morecombe in Episode 1 of Misfits, has been cast as Colonel Manton in Episode 7, titled 'Demons Run'.

The Spotlight entry for actor, Simon Fisher-Becker, who played Dorium Maldavar in 5.12: The Pandorica Opens, states that he will return to the role in Episode 7 of Series 6.

The entry also confirms the title as being 6.7: Demons Run, although this could still change.

I found the idea of a two in one book rather exciting, but you instantly face this awful dilemma of which to read first due to the fact that both have fronts. So, naturally I turned the book over several times before choosing. I was excited to find out that Rory featured in both stories but disappointed he hadn’t made it on to the cover too.

I settled down to read Heart of Stone and was not disappointed as was instantly presented with a mysterious event to which there seemed no logical and immediate reason. How does a wall fall down as though hit by a lorry that doesn’t exist and why have all the rocks turned in to moonstone? Intrigued I read on, the characters capturing me and feeling very in tune with the show. The Doctor, in his Doctory way flounced around getting under everybody’s feet with Amy and Rory desperately trying to keep up. It is quite a light plot, although it does have its darker moments. There are several parts which make you laugh out loud and a few which have you on the edge of your seat. All the way through the twists and turns keep you constantly guessing and intrigued. Everything turning to stone really makes you wonder how can everything turn back? Although occasionally, it can have a slight lack of clarity and the occasional illogical moment, it is a book which keeps you captured and despairing that normality can ever return to the village, which is just what you look for in any good plot.

Thrilled with the first half I eagerly turned the book over and started reading Death Riders. Well, with a ride called “The Death Ride”, that is just asking for trouble. Why are some tunnels out of limits? And will the death ride actually lead to death? There is a lot of suspense built up in this book and you constantly long to know what is waiting round the corner. The funfair itself is enjoyable and Rory in particular jumps off the page whilst trying to win something. I found this half to have a more comedic Doctor and it is really easy to imagine all the scenes taking place. I always find it enjoyable to make the connections at a similar pace to The Doctor as it feels like I am being lead down the path at the correct pace. It had some really wonderful characters and even made you recoil at imaginary smells. Occasionally a bit more description was needed but aside from that it was a really simple plot to follow and I look forward to rereading it in the future.

Both books are very enjoyable and make you want to keep reading till the end in one sitting. I really enjoyed both endings and they felt very satisfying and cheering. They are both very close to character and feel very believable. They are definitely books I would recommend even though they feel aimed at a younger audience then normal. There is enough depth and mystery to all so that you aren't constantly reminded that you are older.

I enjoyed the layout of the books and it was with a pang of sadness that I couldn’t turn over and find another book waiting for me to read.  Very enjoyable and I look forward to reading more in the future, as both Authors are always top class and reliably so.

The only problem with this book is deciding which of the two stories to read first. The book is designed so there is no preference shown to either story. I recommend flipping it (carefully) and start with which ever is facing up, either way you won’t be disappointed.

Both stories are set after Series five and include Rory in the TARDIS crew. Both stories capture the characters of the main cast well and the dialogue fits so well I can hear the voices in my head. They don’t have a crowded TARDIS problem; both Amy and Rory have important moments in both stories. It is Rory that jumps out at me in this he has some very nice moments which fit him perfectly.

Doctor Who failed to win the Best Drama & Best Drama Performance categories at this years National Television Awards.

The Best Drama award, which the show has won for the past 5 consecutive years, instead went to Waterloo Road, in a shock twist that even the bookies couldn't predict.

Even the Best Drama Performance category failed to snag the show an award for Matt Smith, who lost out to David Jason.

Clearly this is a shock for fellow fans, especially as the show has ranked so highly at the awards in previous years.

There was, however, solace in the form of a 3-minute Doctor Who sequence at the be ginning of the show, which featured Matt Smith and Dermot O'Leary. A search on YouTube for 'NTA Doctor Who 2011' will bring up the video.

Regardless of the outcome, it is DWO's opinion that Series Five was one of the finest for Doctor Who to date, with excellent writing, a fantastic cast, and a painstakingly hard working production team to boot. Chins up guys and gals - you were robbed!

The nominations were voted for by the public and the winners announced live on television earlier this evening.
