'Dr U Who' - New Doctor Who Parody Book

Check out the new Doctor Who parody from former journalist and long-time Whovian Darren M Bane.

Dr U Who, available as both a paperback and ebook, is the ‘true’ story – or at least, one timeline’s version of it – of Doctor Who’s triumphant return to prime time television, and subsequent world domination. It reveals the ‘real’ reason behind the BBC’s historic decision to bring Doctor Who back from Hiatus, and put an end to those long wilderness years.

Inspired by the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, this affectionate parody provides ‘definitive’ answers to a number of questions raised by the long-running series over the years, including the “real” reason why so many alien races speak English; the truth behind the ‘missing episodes’; the real cause of the dinosaurs becoming extinct (the cyber ship with Adric on board merely scratched the surface), the unfortunate typo which prevented the tenth Doctor from properly heeding a warning which could have prolonged his life, the reason why anti-matter is called anti-matter, why sci-fi fans are sometimes called anoraks - and plenty more. Just remember, when Cap’n Jack The Lad Harmless is about, then, whatever you do, don’t wink.

Dr U Who was originally published, briefly, exclusively on Kindle until the author discovered www.lulu.com, and the means to make it available as a paperback and on a wide range of ebook sellers, without breaking the bank.

But during that initial brief time on Kindle, it was downloaded 203 times, and attracted six reviews, two of which were five-star,  three were four-star and one was three-star.

Comments from reviewers included: “Well written, affectionate, Dr Who parody. The author has a nice way with words, making this an easy read, with plenty of giggles”, “a right reveting read, clearly written by a true fan of Dr Who”, “his love for, and knowledge of, the franchise shines through in an affectionate parody,” and “the best Doctor Who parody, great satire humour.”

Darren M Bane is a middle-aged kid whose earliest memory of Doctor Who was watching Jon Pertwee in hand-to-hand combat with a Sontaran in The Time Warrior; and he’s been in love with the show ever since. While working as a journalist, he reported on, and then became a member of the crew of, a low-budget fan-made film, Soul’s Ark, which starred Colin Baker, Wendy Padbury and Carole Ann Ford.

Dr U Who is available as a paperback from www.lulu.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Waterstones and others, for £7.99.

It’s available as an ebook from www.lulu.com from 99p, and should soon be available through all the major ebook retailers including Nook, Kobo, Kindle and the iBookstore.

For more information about the author, and other books he has written and is planning to, visit his website at www.dazzab.co.uk.

Doctor How And The Illegal Aliens - Book

As a Doctor Who fan, Mark Speed always wondered about the Doctor’s family. Did he have siblings or cousins? Having grown up with the series since he was a toddler (hiding behind the sofa from Patrick Troughton's enemies), he has struggled with the inconsistencies caused by fifty years of different scriptwriters.

Once he started asking questions Mark realised there might be an interesting explanation: an alternative or parallel Whoniverse. How is Who’s younger twin, and he’s been struggling since his brother’s TV debut in 1963.

Doctor How And The Illegal Aliens is one fan’s loving and light-hearted tribute to the greatest series in TV history, and is free on Kindle from October 10-12.

Will Brooks' 50 Year Diary Volume Two: 1970 - 1981

Doctor Who Online is pleased to announce the publication of Will Brooks’ 50 Year Diary: Volume Two 1970-1981.

In celebration of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary, Will Brooks sits down to watch every episode of the programme made between 1963 - 2013 at the strict pace of one per day.

Having watched each episode, Will records his thoughts in a daily blog for Doctor Who Online, and scores the episode out of ten, on a scale ranging from ‘Perfect, the absolute pinnacle’ to ‘Why am I doing this again?’

Will Brooks’ 50 Year Diary: 1970 - 1981 collects together more than 300 entries of the popular blog, covering the complete eras of the Third and Fourth Doctors (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker), as well as a revisit to the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) stories The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear, episodes of which were returned to the BBC's archive in 2013, having been missing for many decades.

Speaking about the publication of the book, Will told DWO:

“The 1970s was the part of The 50 Year Diary that I was dreading the most. I'd always thought of Jon Pertwee as being my least favourite of all the Doctors, and while I knew Tom Baker was very good, I'd never quite understood the sheer love for that era of the programme.

Having now had the chance to watch through, I've realised that there's a lot to Pertwee's Doctor that I can enjoy, and the reason that the Baker era is considered to be such a Golden Age is because, in many ways, it is! I've found things to enjoy at almost every turn, although not everything was to my tastes...”

The book is released on September 25th 2014.

+  You can pre-order the paperback version of Will Brooks’ 50 Year Diary 1970 - 1981 now from Pageturner Publishing for £14.99.

+  The book is also available for Kindle, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon UK and US.

By Mike Tucker

"Well, I doubt you'll ever see a bigger insect."

Gabby Nichols is putting her son to bed when she hears her daughter cry out. 'Mummy there's a daddy longlegs in my room!' Then the screaming starts... Alan Travers is heading home from the pub when something rushes his face - a spider's web. Then something huge and deadly lumbers from the shadows... Kevin Alperton is on his way to school when he is attacked by a mosquito. A big one. Then things get dangerous.

But it isn't the dead man cocooned inside a huge mass of web that worries the Doctor. It isn't the swarming, mutated insects that make him nervous. It isn't an old man's garbled memories of past dangers that intrigue him.

With the village cut off from the outside world, and the insects becoming more and more dangerous, the Doctor knows that no one is safe. Not unless he can decode the strange symbols engraved on an ancient stone circle, and unravel a mystery dating back to the Second World War.

+  The Crawling Terror is released on 11th September 2014, priced £6.99.

Doctor Who: Celebrating 50 Years Of Fandom - DVD [FTS Media]

FTS Media have announced that their fan-funded documentary, ‘Doctor Who: Celebrating 50 Years of Fandom’, is available now on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as Video On Demand! This celebratory film explores what makes Doctor Who fans so special, and how not only has the show influenced them, but how they have influenced the show in return!

Featuring interviews with actress Louise Jameson, and members of the production team like Robert Shearman and prop builder Nick Robatto, this documentary is sure to “strike a chord with any Doctor Who Fan” (Who-News.com). They also take a trip across the globe to meet Michelle Osorio, a filmmaker from California who just so happens to have a Dalek named Gary in her garage! Most importantly though they speak to the fans, as without them, Doctor Who wouldn’t have been back on our screens for a 50th anniversary episode and this film would never have been made! “A thought-provoking and affectionate look at how fandom has evolved in 50 years” (The Gallifrey Times), this is one documentary you really can’t afford to miss!

With a string of 5 star reviews under their belt, ‘Doctor Who: Celebrating 50 Years of Fandom’ really is a must for any fan! Joe Lidster, writer for Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and a string of Big Finish stories called it a “fantastic and insightful documentary that shows the fun fandom can bring!”, while Lisa Bowerman (Karra in ‘Survival’ and Bernice Summerfield for Big Finish) commented that 50 Years of fandom “reflects absolutely, and with huge affection the impact Doctor Who has had on peoples' lives. It plots the progress of fandom in all its diversity - talks to the people who know, and treats its subject with great respect. Brilliant.”

Radio Times Doctor Who Cover - 17th-23rd May 2014

In this week’s Radio Times, on sale Today (for listings 17th-23rd May 2014) Steven Moffat recalls writing The Day Of The Doctor, revealing it was the most “difficult” and “terrifying” thing he has ever written and reveals why he chose Peter Capaldi to be the new Doctor.

Steven Moffat writes:

“When you choose a Doctor, you want somebody who is utterly compelling, attractive in a very odd way. None of the Doctors are conventionally attractive, but they’re all arresting. Handsome men don’t quite suit. Matt Smith’s a young, good-looking bloke from one angle but is actually the strangest looking man from another. You need that oddity; you need somebody who is carved out of solid star, really. Doctor Who is a whopping great star vehicle, despite the fact it changes star every so often.”

The Day Of The Doctor is one of the nominees for this year’s Radio Times Audience Award at the British Academy Television Awards 2014 – the only BAFTA award open to public vote. Voting is open until 12pm Thursday 15th May, the winner will be announced on Sunday 18th May.

The new issue of Radio Times also includes 16-page guide to the Bafta TV Awards 2014 featuring David Attenborough, Dominic West, Rory Kinnear, Helen George, Laura Carmichael, Natalie Dormer and much, MUCH more...

Doctor Who Magazine - Issue #473

Doctor Who Magazine have sent DWO the cover and details for Issue 473 of DWM.

The Seventh Doctor’s Era is remembered in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine!

Former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel examines how the series was reinvented for a new generation…

In an exclusive feature for DWM, Andrew catches up with the writers he employed back in the late 1980s, when he was the script editor of Doctor Who. Stephen Wyatt, Malcolm Kohll and Ian Briggs reveal what it was like writing the show then – and discuss how their stories paved the way for the modern reinvention of the show.

What does Ian Briggs think of Doctor Who today? "I think it's fantastic. Russell T Davies' approach was a vivid re-imagining, taking the basic principles and doing them in a way TV is now made instead of just continuing from the 1980s... That's the great achievement of Russell T Davies – and Steven Moffat, since he took over. Stylistically in both senses, technical style and storytelling style, the show is bang up to date...."

Also in this issue:

·  Producer Marcus Wilson looks back at his work on Doctor Who, including The Time of the Doctor and the 50th Anniversary Special.
·  Showrunner Steven Moffat answers readers’ questions.
·  DWM pays tribute to the life and times of the late Christopher Barry, one of Doctor Who's most prolific directors.
·  Clive Doig talks to Toby Hadoke about working on the very earliest episodes of Doctor Who.
·  The Fact of Fiction takes a detailed look at the 1969 Ice Warrior adventure, The Seeds of Death.
·  The Blood of Azrael – the Doctor and Clara's latest comic strip adventure continues.
·  The Time Team watch the Tenth Doctor meet an old friend – and some even older enemies – in The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky.
·  Jacqueline Rayner sees Doctor Who's special effects in a whole new light in Relative Dimensions.
·  The Watcher exposes the remarkable relationship between Doctor Who and the Eurovision Song Contest in Wotcha!
·  Reviews of the latest DVDs, CDs, and books.
·  Competitions, puzzles, and much more!

First Doctor Who Lego Cuusoo Project Reaches Goal

Further to our recent report about Lego lifting its ban on Doctor Who Lego Cuusoo submissions, one project has now successfully achieved 10,000 votes and entered the review process.

Lego posted an official updated on GlenBricker's project page, stating:

"Congratulations, GlenBricker and Kaminoan on reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO!

You've presented a very nice TARDIS exterior and interior playset, and an assortment of characters from which to choose. We're looking forward to considering this project in the LEGO Review, but for now excuse us while we go make an electroshock device ... just in case this really IS a Nestene plot to take over the world via a toy factory!

We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?

This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A "LEGO Review Board" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The LEGO Review Begins in May

This project qualifies for the Second 2014 Review beginning in May and ending in September. For more information about the LEGO review process, see this knowledge base article.

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a "go/no go" decision to develop and sell a product based on the Doctor Who concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months."

DWO got in touch with Glen and Jared from the GlenBricker team to discuss their Doctor Who project:

When you first heard about Lego’s plans to open up the Doctor Who projects, what was your first thought and how did you come to settle on the project you submitted?

Glen: Ha..well, I kind of had three thoughts at the same time...kind of Left Brain/Right Brain thinking with the Geeky Brain in the back interrupting...he is always interrupting.

Left Brain: Go talk to JARED RIGHT NOW! Right Brain: You don't have time for this! Geeky Brain: NESTENE PLOT!

When Jared got back with me we were totally in sync on the set.

Jared: Basically we knew we needed a TARDIS, console, and some characters (Both good and bad), I had 2/3rds of the puzzle, Glen had the other 1/3rd

How did it feel when you found out you had made it to the review stage?

Jared: Excited and nervous, want to know NOW!

Glen: Exhausted...and Groggy,  I tried staying up for it, like New Years Eve, but I fell asleep.  I don't sleep much but I had just finished up at SXSW (http://sxsw.com/) so my body was sore from walking all over the place for five days, lugging a laptop in a backpack...so, I woke up, Laptop right in front of me...as I said, I fell asleep in front of it.  Pressed Refresh and there it was..."Achieved."

It was very exciting, but it is only the starting of the next stage.  Now is the wait, and then the review, and then the reveal.  The real awesome thing though was that I finally felt everything snap...it was kind of like a Regeneration ;).  I had focused so much on this idea and now it was done.

Sure, I have to write up a few articles on the next stage and what this really means to Doctor Who fans who are not familiar with the Lego Cuusoo Review process.  But I had shelved all these other ideas while working on this singular concept, so it is so rejuvenating to get back to them, let all these Tangents breath: how can I do a Silurian in Lego? a Sontaran?  How do I make Granny Weatherwax's Beehive (http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/36302).

What would your dream Doctor Who Lego set be?

Jared: I think we all want a themed series, but Cuusoo is simply for a set, so I believe the dream set is much as we pitched to LEGO, A TARDIS (preferably with light and sound, like the one I made, but couldn't show due to Cuusoo restrictions), 2-3 Doctors + 2 companions, Angels, Daleks, Cybermen, and a few other aliens.  LEGO still doesn't want to load up a set with figures at a lower price point, but needs to do so, or needs to have other sets to go along with this one to capture everyone's "Cuusoo" (Wish).

Glen: That is an interesting and very intelligent question.  The easy answer is of course, the one we presented in the project.  But, it is much more complex than that.  When I make Cuusoo projects I try to take my Love of the subject (in this case, Doctor Who) and find where it intersects with the widest audience and thus greatest chance of resulting in actual production.

It is pretty easy for high-end Lego fans like myself and Jared to recreate what we like most from Dotor Who.  The majority of episodes take place in standard cities,  future environments, and of course quarries,  all of which lend themselves well to Lego.

There is, however, not that much Lego designed for...well...London Circa 1892...Personally, my ideal Official Doctor Who set would be one based on "The Snowmen."  There are so many great characters in that episode and great visuals.  Plus a carriage.

A close competitor for it would be one based on "The Girl in the Fireplace."  The story is phenomenal, and again, rare visuals to be had.  There would of course be the fireplace, and those beautifully creepy Clockwork Droids!

Man, so hard to choose.  I could of course also go for a Tom Baker set like "City of Death."

More news on the review stage as we get it...
